A dozen US senators unveiled bipartisan legislation Tuesday expanding President Joe Biden's legal authority to ban TikTok nationwide, marking the latest in a string of congressional proposals threatening the social media platform's future in the United States. The bill, as currently drafted, would in essence, allow the Department of Commerce to "review, block, and mitigate" software and hardware made by entities in adversarial nations - China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea – that pose an "undue or unacceptable risk" to Americans. It would allow restrictions that include "up to and including" a ban from the American market entirely. TikTok is owned by the private Chinese company, ByteDance, and much of the scrutiny has revolved around the firm's relationship with the Chinese government. The U.S. government has tried to kill TikTok, which has some 100 million U.S. users, before. Former President Trump attempted to force the app to shut down via executive order, though that was blocked in the courts. TikTok said in a statement that any "U.S. ban on TikTok is a ban on the export of American culture and values to the billion-plus people who use our service worldwide." Read more -here-
