One of the highly anticipated vehicles in the EV space, the Tesla Cybertruck, will not be going in for full-volume production till 2024. The news was confirmed by its CEO, Elon Musk, at Tesla's fourth-quarter earnings calls on Wednesday. While some may be disappointed by the delay, Tesla reassured investors that the production equipment needed for the Cybertruck's assembly, including the castings for the electric pickup's body, have already begun to be installed at the company's Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019, but has delayed its release multiple times. The company also warned that the final specs and pricing will change. The EV was originally supposed to start at $39,900 in its single-motor configuration and climb to nearly $70,000 for the tri-motor version. While the automaker is still taking deposits, it's no longer promising specific configurations. The pandemic, a rough economy, longstanding supply chain issues and design tweaks are all expected to influence what you can ultimately buy. Getting the Cybertruck to market will be Tesla's most intriguing challenge to date. Previous launches have seen Tesla racing ahead of the market into untrod territory for EVs. But with the Cybertruck, Tesla will be following the leaders. The Ford F-150 Lightning, Hummer EV and Rivian R1T are already delivered, and the Toyota Tacoma Electric, Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV slated to hit lots later this year or next.
