Elon Musk says the Tesla Cybertruck can float like a boat

The Tesla Cybertruck was introduced in 2019 as an electric vehicle that would have the functionality of a pick-up truck with the performance of a sports car. However, on Thursday Elon Musk suggested the vehicle will offer even more than that - and could "briefly" function as a boat.

"Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren't too choppy," the tweet reads.

It is important to note that Musk is not just advertising stellar river-fording capabilities, a major versatility strength of electric trucks like the Rivian R1T. Musk is suggesting that the truck is not only waterproof enough to enter and cross water under its own power but capable of "briefly" floating, long enough for the truck to actually be used as a somewhat amphibious vehicle.

Musk's reasoning behind the waterproof functionality is that the Cybertruck will need to be able to travel from Starbase - a SpaceX's facility located at Boca Chica, Texas - to South Padre Island, which requires crossing the channel.

The Cybertruck is still only available for preorder and apparently, production on the vehicles is set to start in mid-2023, so maybe put a hold on that new car, new tinny combo you were thinking of for weekends until we can see if this thing actually floats.
