Meta has been fined €405 million ($402 million) by the Irish Data Protection Commission for its handling of children's privacy settings on Instagram, which violated Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As Politico reports, it's the second-largest fine to come out of Europe's GDPR laws, and the third (and largest) fine levied against Meta by the regulator. The Irish regulator launched an investigation into the app two years ago over phone numbers and email addresses that were available to the public from teenagers who had business accounts on the platform and for having the public-by-default accounts for children between the ages of 13 and 17, according to the Times. "We adopted our final decision last Friday and it does contain a fine of 405 million euro," said the spokesperson for Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner, the lead regulator of Instagram and Facebook's (FB) parent company. Instagram updated its settings over a year ago and has since released new features to keep teens safe and their information private, the Meta spokesperson said. The spokesperson said Instagram disagrees with how the fine was calculated and is carefully reviewing the decision. The development comes as Meta and other social media networks are under increasing scrutiny, especially following an explosive investigation published by The Wall Street Journal last year. The Journal published information obtained by former Facebook product manager Frances Haugen that detailed the extent to which Facebook knew that Instagram was unhealthy for teens. Read more -here-
