As the Federal Communications Commission decides whether the 12 GHz signal spectrum - currently used to beam down satellite TV as well as internet from SpaceX's Starlink service - should be opened up to ground-based 5G service, burgeoning telecom Dish has pushed back on SpaceX's claim that its satellite internet would be disrupted should the spectrum be used for 5G. Dish says SpaceX has been lying to customers about how a plan to expand the use of certain airwaves for 5G could disrupt its Starlink internet-from-space service. SpaceX sent a "manipulated filing" to the Federal Communications Commission in an attempt to prove the expanded 5G usage would lead to substantial interference, writes Dish and a group of other companies known as the 5G for 12 GHz Coalition. They write that SpaceX is conducting "a public misinformation campaign" against 5G. "This tactic, which is commonly used by Elon Musk, is not only disingenuous, but it promulgates an anti-5G narrative that is harmful to American consumers who deserve greater competition, connectivity options and innovation," the Coalition writes in a statement published today. "The only independent engineering analysis demonstrates that co-existence is eminently possible between satellite and 5G operations. Starlink wants to completely sideline 500 MHz of critical mid-band spectrum from being used for 5G," said a Dish spokesperson in a statement emailed to CNET. Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission has received more than 90,000 comments from Starlink users urging the agency to side with SpaceX in the spectrum battle against Dish Network. The comments were all submitted since last week when SpaceX asked Starlink customers to weigh in on an FCC proceeding that seeks public input on the "feasibility of allowing mobile services in the 12.2-12.7 GHz band while protecting incumbents from harmful interference."
