Meta will open its first physical retail store next month, in a sign of the increasing importance of its hardware business as the company pivots to the metaverse. The "Meta Store" opens May 9th in Burlingame, California, close to the headquarters for Meta's Reality Labs division. The store will showcase the company's VR headsets, Ray-Ban Stories glasses and Portal devices; and will offer interactive demos for shoppers. Unlike, say, the Apple Store, there will only be one Meta Store for now. It will be open from 11:00AM to 6:00PM Monday through Friday, which isn't exactly prime shopping hours. Meta store head Martin Gilliard says in a statement that the Burlingame location "gives us more opportunity to experiment and keep the customer experience core to our development," lessons from which will "help define our future retail strategy." "Once people experience the technology, they can gain a better appreciation for it. If we did our job right, people should leave and tell their friends, 'You've got to go check out the Meta Store.'" Gilliard wrote in a blog post. Meta is the latest big tech company to open a retail store to showcase its hardware. Google opened one such store in New York last year. Microsoft shuttered its 83 stores in 2020, but reconfigured a few as "experience centers" and started selling products at them in 2021.
