Cyberattack hits Ukrainian government and banks

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is taking different forms, including cyberattacks. A newly discovered piece of destructive software found circulating in Ukraine has hit hundreds of computers, according to researchers at the cybersecurity firm ESET, part of what Ukrainian officials said was an intensifying wave of hacks aimed at the country.

A distributed-denial-of-service attack that began last week and temporarily knocked government websites offline Wednesday continued and there were sporadic internet outages across the country, said Doug Madory, director of internet analysis for the U.S. network management firm Kentik Inc.

The source of the apparent cyberattack is unconfirmed, CNBC noted, but it came as Russian troops surround Ukraine, in what US President Joe Biden on Tuesday called the "beginning of a Russian invasion."

Ukraine's military and banks were hit by a similar attack last week, and security experts warned that Russia could ramp up cyberattacks against Ukraine in an effort to destabilize its government and economy.
