Apple is reportedly planning to begin ending mask requirements for customers at some of its US retail stores as early as Friday. The company told employees about the change in an internal memo on Thursday, Bloomberg reported. The company is lifting the requirements due to declining COVID-19 case numbers and improving vaccination rates, according to the memo. The policy will apply regardless of a customer's vaccination status, although retail staff will still have to wear masks due to longer interactions and closer contact. Stores will still require masks for everyone in areas where the local government demands the safety measure, such as in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. "After careful review, the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) team, along with leadership, have determined it's safe to update our guidance on masks for customers in your store," says the memo. Apparently, this change is based on "the positive trends in vaccinations, testing, and case counts" for the area of each retail store that received the message. Apple Stores dropped their mask rules in June, but reinstated them in July as the delta variant led to a surge in coronavirus infections. Most Apple office workers are still working remotely; in August, the company delayed the reopening of its offices until January, after which workers are expected to be in the office at least three days a week.
