Samsung can remotely disable stolen TVs

In a post on its website, Samsung discussed an event that happened in July in South Africa where a distributor was broken into and a number of its TVs were stolen in the process. However, it turns out that the thieves will not be able to profit off their escapade as Samsung has outfitted its TVs with remote blocking technology called "TV Block".

Samsung's report says that this remote bricking tool is "pre-loaded on all Samsung TV products," and that this system was being put in place in South Africa and "beyond its borders." In the event of a legitimate customer being accidentally bricked, they can submit a proof of purchase to a Samsung email address to get their purchase (anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars) reinstated.

For the TV Block Function to work, Samsung needs to know serial code of the stolen unit. When the set connects to the internet, it checks its serial code against a list on Samsung's servers, and disables all TV functionality if it finds a match.

If someone's TV is blocked accidentally, Samsung will restore it once the person can share proof of purchase and a valid TV license with a legitimate retailer. You can send proof of purchase to zaservicemanager@samsung.com for validation and can expect to hear back within 48 hours.
