The United States has added smartphone maker Xiaomi to its list of blacklisted Chinese manufacturers, following an executive order signed by President Trump that serves as his final sanction on China before leaving office this week. The US Department of Defense (DOD) stated that it "is determined to highlight and counter the People's Republic of China's (PRC) Military-Civil Fusion development strategy". According to the DOD, these companies are responsible for modernising the People's Liberation Army (PLA) by giving them access to various technologies. The blacklist was initially released in June 2020 and includes other Chinese companies such as Huawei and SMIC. Xiaomi has already denied its ties with the Chinese military and that it will "take the appropriate course of actions to protect the interests of the Company and its shareholders". "The company confirms that it is not owned, controlled, or affiliated with the Chinese military, and is not a 'Communist Chinese military company' defined under the NDAA," Xiaomi said in a statement on Friday. "The company reiterates that it provides products and services for civilian and commercial use." Unlike with Huawei, American firms have not been barred from doing business with Xiaomi.
