At its big iPhone 12 event, Apple announced today new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, which support new faster 5G networks. The newly designed iPhone 12 models feature expansive edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays for a brighter, more immersive viewing experience, and a new Ceramic Shield front cover, providing the biggest jump in durability ever on iPhone.

The Apple-designed A14 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone, powers every experience on iPhone 12, and coupled with an advanced dual-camera system, delivers new computational photography features and the highest quality video in a smartphone. iPhone 12 models also introduce MagSafe, offering high-powered wireless charging and an all-new ecosystem of accessories that easily attach to iPhone.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini will be available in five aluminum finishes, including blue, green, black, white, and (PRODUCT)RED.1 The iPhone 12 costs $799 while the Mini costs $699. Pre-orders for iPhone 12 begin Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23. iPhone 12 mini will be available for pre-order beginning Friday, November 6, and in stores beginning Friday, November 13.

Hoping to have "net zero climate impact" globally by 2030, Apple has decided to omit some accessories sold with the phones. From now on iPhones won't come with included white headphones in the box, nor the standard outlet adapter for the power cable. Thankfully there will be a power cable in the box: a standard USB-C to Lightning cable that you can plug into your old wall adapter or a laptop.

Another interesting device Apple introduced today is the HomePod Mini smart speaker. The device shares a design similar to the standard HomePod, but is spherical and less expensive - only $99, compared to the $300 original HomePod. Its design also includes a backlit touch surface on the top with playback controls. That surface will also glow when Siri is invoked.

Apple also announced a new feature designed for use with its HomePod speakers, including its just-introduced HomePod Mini: Intercom. Similar to Alexa's "announce" feature, Intercom will allow HomePod owners to leverage their smart speakers — and other Apple devices — to communicate with all family members at once.
