Google Maps will show COVID-19 outbreaks

Google has created a new, optional "COVID-19 Info" filter in its Maps that, when activated, color-codes your app to show the severity of coronavirus cases in your area.

Specifically, the company has released a new layer for Maps which displays the seven-day average of new COVID cases per 100,000 people as well as notes whether that infection rate is increasing or decreasing. This layer pulls its data from a variety of sources including Johns Hopkins University, the New York Times, and Wikipedia which in turn get their data from the likes of the World Health Organization, national governments and area hospitals.

The newly announced feature is simple to use, according to Google, which says that under the layers button in the top right corner of the app, users will now see a new option called 'COVID-19 info.' To make it easier for viewers to understand the data on show, Google has also included color coding:

  • Grey: Less than 1 case
  • Yellow: 1 - 10 cases
  • Orange: 10 - 20 cases
  • Dark orange: 20 - 30 cases
  • Red: 30 - 40 cases
  • Dark red: 40+ cases

This new coronavirus-themed update is in line with similar advances Google has brought to Maps recently, such as showing COVID-19 alerts in transit, as well as COVID checkpoints in driving navigation. And, as noted, this update that includes the COVID-19 layer is rolling out worldwide this week for both Android and iOS users.
