NBCUniversal officially unveiled its new streaming service, Peacock, today, announcing that the service will be available at no additional cost for Comcast's Xfinity X1 and Flex customers on April 15, before launching nationally on July 15. The service will include a host of live short-form clips of news and sports, using its established stars. NBCU's investment in Olympic rights will be well exploited in short-form and documentary content on Peacock. Peacock will also feature live breaking news coverage and access to "NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt." Full episodes of news magazine show "Dateline" will also be available for Peacock subscribers. Unlike some of its entertainment rivals, NBCU plans to make its service mostly free to consumers, supporting it through advertising instead. Netflix and Disney, who are considered the two streaming titans to beat, are ad-free. Peacock will debut with 10 ad experiences that emphasize interactivity and performance. It will run just five minutes of ads per hour, the lightest ad load in the industry. NBCUniversal will also set strict standards for frequency caps. If you're a Comcast or Cox customer, you basically score a $5 discount: You watch with an ad-supported Premium membership free, or pay $5 to updgrade to the ad-free version. NBC said it's working on more partnerships to offer this discount to a wider array of consumers.
