Sprint is pulling the plug on its prepaid service Virgin Mobile. Starting in February, customers will be transferred to another Sprint prepaid service, Boost Mobile. As the two brands operate on the same network, Virgin says the transition will be smooth. Most customers should expect to keep their same phone and phone number, according to an FAQ on the Virgin Mobile site. The move doesn't come as a complete surprise as Sprint has long been pulling back marketing and distribution for the brand, most recently in October severing ties with Walmart as a distribution partner. Since then Virgin Mobile could only be purchased through an online portal, as Walmart was the last remaining brick-and-mortar sales channel, following earlier decisions in 2019 to pull the brand from Best Buy stores and Meijer. Virgin Mobile USA launched in June 2002 as a virtual operator borrowing Sprint's network; it was absorbed into Sprint in 2009. Traditionally, Virgin appealed more to younger, upscale consumers such as college students who didn't have the established credit for postpaid plans, as opposed to Boost Mobile's focus on inner-city locations. Other "Virgin Mobile" brands in other countries are unaffected, as they're run by other companies—in Canada, for instance, Virgin Mobile is run by Bell, and in the UK it's run directly by Virgin Media.
