Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has teamed up with ride sharing service Uber to develop a Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) concept that could be used as an electric flying taxi in the future.

A full-scale mock-up, dubbed the S-A1, is making its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. The electrically powered PAV will have the capability of carrying up to four passengers on trips of up to 60 miles at speeds reaching 180 mph, the partners said Monday.

The deal makes Hyundai the first car company to join Uber Elevate, which hopes to run flight demonstrations this year with a goal of making services available in 2023. Uber has nominated Melbourne in Australia and the US cities of Dallas and Los Angeles as pilot cities.

"Hyundai will produce and deploy the air vehicles, and Uber will provide airspace support services, connections to ground transportation, and customer interfaces through an aerial ride share network," the two companies said in a joint statement.

"The overall cost to produce and operate UAM (urban air mobility) vehicles should be really low enough for everyone to enjoy the freedom to fly," Shin Jai-won, Executive Vice President and Head of Urban Air Mobility Division at Hyundai Motor, said at a CES presentation.
