The Wi-Fi Alliance officially launched Wi-Fi 6 certification today. Wi-Fi 6 — aka 802.11ax — is the next generation of Wi-Fi. It will allow many more nearby devices to use the same Wi-Fi channels and frequencies without causing as much congestion and lag as Wi-Fi 5 (better known as 802.11ac) and Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) do. The Wi-Fi Certified 6 program verifies that devices support all of the individual upgrades that make Wi-Fi 6 up to 40% faster than Wi-Fi 5. That includes wonky features like orthogonal frequency division multiple access, which allows Wi-Fi 6 routers to serve multiple clients simultaneously within a single channel. 802.11ax mandates support for the WPA3 encryption and authentication protocol. WPA3 provides considerably better security for your Wi-Fi network than WPA2 did, and due to its adoption of Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE), it will hopefully prove more robust toward future attacks as well. WiFi 6 also lays the groundwork for 5G home networks, with the WiFi Alliance saying today that this certification "delivers critical connectivity that supports cellular networks, and leverages high speeds, low latency, power efficiency, greater capacity, and enhanced coverage to deliver many advanced 5G services." Support for WiFi 6 is certainly starting out small, but now that this certification has arrived, we'll see more and more devices that support the new standard. Read more -here-
