USB4 specifications have been released

The USB Implementers Forum has announced that revealed USB4 is finalized for wide deployment. USB4, as it's now styled (versus USB 4), was announced in March with a few promises regarding features, but now the actual technical specifications have been released. While the implementation of USB4 by vendors may be a long time away from happening, the draft specification itself is expected to be published later in 2019.

USB4 doubles speeds compared to today's fastest USB 3.2 by incorporating Intel's speedy Thunderbolt technology that you already see on high-end laptops and peripherals. You will need USB 4 certified cables to take advantage of these speeds. Of course, Thunderbolt 3 has supported 40Gbps transfer for a while now, and that brings us to the next bit.

USB4 will use the same form factor as USB type-C and will be backward compatible with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3. In other words, you'll be able to use just about any existing USB type-C device with a machine featuring a USB4 bus. The new connection will be similar to USB 3 in that it will support both data and display protocols, so expect to see more monitors feature USB connections in addition to HDMI ports.

There is no word on when we will be seeing USB4 integrated into computers and accessories, but now that the tech specs have been completed, the onus is now on manufacturers to include them, which we expect will most likely happen in 2020.
