DOJ announces investigation into big tech

The US Department of Justice took the unusual step of announcing an antitrust investigation against America's biggest tech firms. It's the first clear public confirmation of a major U.S. antitrust review of the tech industry. The examination promises to be the broadest and potentially toughest scrutiny of companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon.

The DOJ said its antitrust division will collect information from the public, other companies and industry participants to examine "whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation or otherwise harmed consumers".

"Without the discipline of meaningful market-based competition, digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands," Makan Delrahim, head of the Antitrust Division, said. "The Department's antitrust review will explore these important issues."

Last week representatives from technology companies were hauled in before Congress to testify about their companies' policies and practices. They were met with withering criticism from both the left and the right sides of the aisle over their businesses practices.
