Alphabet's Wing launches drone delivery service in Australia

Alphabet-owned startup company Wing has launched a delivery service via drone in Canberra, Australia. The service was approved by the Australian government's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). At first, Wing drone deliveries will only be available in three suburbs: Palmerston, Franklin and Crace. It'll gradually expand its offering over time.

Under the permit, Wing is barred from flying its drones before 7AM between Monday and Saturday and 8AM on Sundays and public holidays. The company can fly over houses but must avoid major roads such as the Barton Highway, Federal Highway and Horse Park Drive. However, Wing is allowed to pilot its drones five meters above and two meters to the side of people while making deliveries - a dramatically shorter distance than the typical 30-meter rule in Australia.

To get the products, users will be required to order stuff via Wing's app and the order will be delivered to users' doorsteps via drones. The service has collaborated with a couple of local businesses such as Kickstart Expresso, Capital Chemist, Pure Gelato, Jasper + Myrtle, Bakers Delight, Guzman Y Gomez, and Drummond Golf.

Wing spent 18 months testing its drone deliveries in Australia. The company has already completed more than 3,000 drone deliveries during its testing phases. It's also preparing to launch in Europe, with the introduction of service in the Helsinki area of Finland.
