Nvidia announced today that it will buy Israeli chipmaker Mellanox for $6.9 billion, paying $125 per share in cash. The deal would be Nvidia's biggest-ever acquisition and will boost its business of making chips for data centers, thus reducing its reliance on the video game industry, for which it is best known as a major technology vendor. Mellanox makes chips and other equipment for high-performance computing, including networking gear and interconnects. Nvidia and the Israeli company have worked together previously on developing high-performance computers, noting in the announcement that they recently worked together on the world’s two fastest supercomputers, which are operated by the U.S. Department of Energy. Nvidia has expanded its product portfolio in recent years beyond high-end graphics for gaming and workstations to include data-intensive tasks related to AI, scientific computing, and data analytics. In doing so, the firm has diversified its product portfolio. But it has also found a new growth business that finds Nvidia competing with players like Intel, Qualcomm, and dozens of specialty chipmakers. Today, the firm derives almost one-third of its revenues from datacenter computing. The deal is expected to close at the end of 2019. Read more -here-
