Tor mobile browser launched for Android

The Tor Project, the organization behind the Tor network and the Tor Browser, launched today its first ever mobile browser with the release of the Tor Browser for Android.

The new browser is based on Firefox v60 and is currently considered an alpha release, meaning some bugs should be expected. It'll improve on the organization's other browser, Orfox, by negating the need for a separate app to connect you to its proxy network so you can get around firewalls and avoid being spied on. Orfox, meanwhile, will be sunsetted when the new browser is out.

Users can download the free app on Google Play or through the group's website. To protect their privacy, the browser funnels their internet traffic through a large network on volunteer-operated servers across the world. Doing this can anonymize users' internet presence by scrambling the details of their location and IP address.

For the alpha versions of the Tor Browser for Android, users will also need to install Orbot, a mobile proxy application that will help the Android browser connect to the Tor network. For future releases, the Tor Project says this won't be necessary.
