Back in January, Skype announced it was testing end-to-end encrypted chat conversations, secured using Signal Protocol by Open Whisper Systems. Now, the feature is available for all users on Skype iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows Desktop. It is simply called Private Conversations and allows users to start end-to-end encrypted conversations. The feature supports end-to-end encryption for audio, text messages, and files, but it's not supported for video calls. The feature does not go into effect automatically. Much like Facebook's Secret Conversation tool, Skype's end-to-end encryption will need to be enabled on a per-conversation basis. To start a new encrypted chat with one of your Skype contacts, simply select the "New Private Conversation" option when you begin a new chat. Once the contact in question confirms that they want to participate in a private chat, all your communications moving forward will be protected. Keep in mind that ending a private conversation doesn't remove the messages sent during the conversation, which might be a little odd to some — but you can manually delete the private conversation if you'd like.
