Asus has recently announced firmware update for some of its routers that will turn your existing routers into a mesh WiFi network. The new feature is called AiMesh and will work only with Asus routers. In the list with compatible models are: RT-AC68U(R/F/W/P), RT-AC86U, RT-AC88U, RT-AC1900, RT-AC2900, RT-AC3100. The company plans to roll the update for even more of its models later this year. Assuming you have the right hardware, you first install the beta firmware with AiMesh onto your main router and you set it up as you normally would. On your second router, which you want to use to extend the main one, install the AiMesh firmware too and then factory reset the access point. Once you do, you will see the point appear as a mesh node, ready to extend your existing WiFi setup. This all happens through the ASUS Router app. AiMesh incorporates several technologies to ensure performance and reliability. A data 'backbone' connects all the AiMesh-enabled routers, with AiMesh intelligently choosing either a wired connection or the optimal frequency band — 5GHz or 2.4GHz. With tri-band routers, it will dedicate one of the two 5GHz bands to inter-router communications. Self-healing capability immediately replaces a failed router using the remaining router connections. Additionally, ASUS AiMesh checks the signal strength to each device from each router to ensure that devices are always connected to the best WiFi signal, automatically switching to a different router if needed. The new feature greatly increases the flexibility of deployment and reuse of the above router models. Note, however that the network is still in star configuration relying on one central router with multiple remote AiMesh nodes. Read more -here-
