Magic Leap's hi-tech augmented reality glasses revealed

The secretive Florida-based startup Magic Leap has announced its first product - a pair of augmented-reality smartglasses. For years, Magic Leap has raised astronomical rounds of funding from the likes of Google and Alibaba, Fidelity and JP Morgan, while remaining secretive about its actual product.

This is the company's first product, called the Magic Leap One Creator Edition. It is a mixed reality (MR), nearly standalone headset featuring what the company calls a Digital Lightfield and Soundfield audio.

The design should reduce or eliminate the problem of the eye's accommodation (the distance on which it focuses) conflicting with vergence (the distance your two eyes think they are looking based on the disparity between the images seen by each of them).

The round-lensed goggles house the displays, audio, and external camera sensors. A handheld controller with touchpad looks like an advanced version of the wands that come with Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream View's phone-based VR headsets. The system connects to a round computer that clips to your body and makes everything work.

It's self-contained, and doesn't need to be tethered to a phone or PC. But we don't know a specific price or release date yet. There's a pair of glasses (called Lightwear), a belt pack (called Lightpack), and a controller.

The company is targeting developers and says the headset will be available in early 2018.
