Google is reportedly in talks to invest $875 million in LG Display, one of the world's most prominent producer of screens for smartphones and tablets, in attempt to get a guaranteed stable supply of flexible OLED panels for its Pixel phones.

OLED has several advantages over LCD including per-pixel lighting control, much improved contrast and black levels, they are thinner, and enjoy better viewing angles.

Google launched its first Pixel phones toward the end of 2016 with 5-inch and 5.5-inch OLED displays. The phones were well received, but the panels needed to make the phones are in short supply and not always easy to come by in big quantities. Google is reportedly hoping to avoid shortages in the future by investing in LG Display.

LG Display declined to comment on the Google deal, but if LG does accept Google's investment money, then we most likely are heading towards a smartphone market full of flexible OLEDs.
