Amped Wireless introduced the HELIOS range extender and router series at CES 2017 today. The HELIOS-EX high-power tri-band extender won a CES Innovations award. It is designed to eliminate one of the biggest hurdles of extenders in general, by using a separate backhaul link to the main router when combined with its router version, the RTA2200T HELIOS router. Both have one 2.4GHz and two 5GHz radios, using one of the 5GHz links for backhaul and the others for client connections. This type of design allows for much less noise and better throughput.

The HELIOS-EX can work with any router, but to achieve the best throughput and "seamless hand-off" you'd need to pair it with its counterpart router. Amped Wireless calls this separate backhaul "DirectLink". It is not new, it is also available with the Netgear Orbi WiFi system, and the new Linksys Velop "Whole Home Wi-Fi" system also introduced today at CES.
