Several years after being announced for the first time, the super-fast alternative to WiFi known as 'Li-Fi' has now been used outside the lab after Estonian company Velmenni has started to offer the technology in a commercial setting. The company is providing speeds at up to 1GBps by using the technology. "We are doing a few pilot projects within different industries where we can utilise the VLC (visible light communication) technology," Deepak Solanki, CEO of the Estonian tech company, Velmenni, said. "Currently we have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light. We are also doing a pilot project with a private client where we are setting up a Li-Fi network to access the Internet in their office space.” Li-Fi is a wireless technology that transmits high-speed data using visible light communication (VLC). For the first time, Li-Fi was demonstrated at the University of Edinburgh back in 2011. Then the flickering light from a single LED, was able to transmit data at 224 gigabits per second - which was a lab-based record. That's 18 movies of 1.5 GB eachbeing downloaded every single second. Of course, people won't be disturbed by these lights, because these are LEDs that can be switched on and off at speeds imperceptible to the naked eye. Read more -here-
