Chrome exploit puts Android smartphones at risk

Chinese security researcher Guang Gong has found a vulnerability in Chrome for Android that could allow an attacker to gain full control over nearly any Android device. The exploit was demonstrated at MobilePwn2Own, which was held at a Tokyo-based PacSec conference.

It took Gong three months to develop the exploit. It is supposed to affect every version of Android running the latest version of Chrome.The bug lies in the JavaScript v8 engine of the Chrome browser for Android and hackers can gain control of a device by just sending the user a malicious web link.

The full details weren't revealed, in order to prevent malicious attacks before a fix is issued. Google has been notified about the bug and is expected to release a patch soon.

Meanwhile, users can protect themselves by avoiding clicking on suspicious links and to use the Play Store for downloads.
