In an attempt to compete with Amazon, retail chain Wal-Mart Stores Inc have applied to the Federal Aviation Administration for a waiver to test drones for home delivery, and for use at its distribution centers and stores.

In the last months, the giant has been carrying out indoor tests of small drones - and now it wants to get regulatory approval to test the machines outdoors.

According to Dan Toporek, a spokesman for the retailer, the drones may be used for different purposes.

"You can envision a scenario where a drone is at one of our million-square-foot distribution centers, and it can fly through the center and do inventory work," he said. "And we're thinking, can we fly something from one distribution center to a fulfillment center, or to a store?" Toporek said.

"Then there's the idea of curbside pickup. Could you bring goods out to somebody at the corner of the parking lot, for example, using a drone?" he said.

The company plans to use drones manufactured by the world's largest drone maker - China's SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd.
