Surveillance company stolen data exposes government clients

Italian company Hacking Team - specializing in surveillance software - has been hacked and more than 400GB of data have been stolen. The unknown hackers have also hijacked Hacking Team's Twitter account and published screenshots of emails stolen in the raid.

The company develops the Da Vinci surveillance software, used by governments to monitor the web. It is considered as an Enemy of the Internet by activist outfit Reporters Without Borders.

The stolen data includes a list of the countries that have bought Hacking Team's software, and emails suggesting intelligence agencies use it to spy on activists and journalists. Among the countries are: Azerbaijan, Chile, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sudan.
