Airbus Group has been chosen to design and build about 900 satellites for privately-owned OneWeb, which plans to offer high-speed Internet to customers across the world. The project is expected to cost about $2 billion and will be the world's largest satellite constellation. Each of the satellites will weigh less than 330 pounds (150 kilograms). About 700 of them will be launched into orbit around Earth beginning in 2018. The rest will stay on the ground and will be used as replacements if needed. "Teaming with OneWeb with a requirement to produce several small satellites each day has inspired us to develop innovative designs and processes that will dramatically lower the cost in large volumes for high-performance space applications," said François Auque, head of space systems at Airbus Defense and Space."Without doubt, this program is challenging but we’re ready for it because we have leveraged resources and expertise across the entire Airbus Group."
