IBM has announced that it plans to establish a new business unit dedicated to providing IoT systems and services to enterprises. The company will invest US$3 billion for the initiative for a period of four years. The heart of the new business unit is a collection of online software called IoT Foundation that runs on IBM's existing cloud services and allows customers and partners to create new applications and enhance existing ones with real-time data and analysis. "We're only at the very beginning of an amazing revolution. If we thought we were dealing with big data now, we haven't seen anything yet," said Erick Brethenoux, IBM director of analytics."Our knowledge of the world grows with every connected sensor and device, but too often we are not acting on it, even when we know we can ensure a better result," says Bob Picciano, senior vice president, IBM Analytics. "This is a major focus of investment for IBM because it's a rich and broad-based opportunity where innovation matters. Over the next decade, integration of IoT in business operations and decision-making will transform business." IBM has also cooperated with the Weather Company, the owner of the Weather Channel and other information providers. Under the deal, WSI will offer its weather data service—with information from more than 100,000 sensors, aircraft and drones — through IBM's cloud service. The giant will also provide cloud and mobile app developer tools which will give developers a chance to take advantage of WSI data combined with data from operational systems, connected devices and sensors using advanced analytics through Bluemix.
