Sprint guarantees unlimited talk, text and data 'for life'

Sprint introduced yesterday a new wireless plan that guarantees new and existing subscribers unlimited voice, text and data plans at reduced prices. The "guarantee" in the unlimited guarantee only applies to the "unlimited" part, not the price.

Under new plans that start Friday, Sprint customers can get unlimited data, texting and calling for $80 a month, down from about $110 for similar services. Previously, a Sprint customer received 450 minutes of talk time with unlimited data and texting for $80 a month.

"This puts an exclamation point on our unlimited commitment as AT&T and Verizon move away from unlimited," Dan Hesse, Sprint's chief executive officer, said in an interview. "What we are saying with this plan is, 'If you come over, we will guarantee unlimited for life.'"

The announcement of the new plans came just a day after SoftBank Corp (9984.T) closed its $21.6 billion purchase of 78 percent of Sprint and two days after Sprint closed its buyout of Clearwire Corp, which has a vast amount of wireless airwaves licenses.
