"Six Strikes" Anti-Piracy Scheme Starts Monday2013-02-25 09:25 by DanielaTags: piracy
Five major Internet service providers, striking a deal with the music and movie industries, today will launch a program in which they'll first warn, and then penalize, suspected copyright infringers. The Copyright Alert System, as it's been named, will allow an individual to receive up to six "alerts" when it's been detected that said user is sharing copyright content – after said copyright owner complains, that is. These alerts, according to the Copyright Alert System's website, will eventually result in a "mitigation measure" for those who continue to share copyright material. The ISPs will focus on peer-to-peer systems, monitoring their networks for activity that may involve copyrighted material. After five or six suspected instances, the ISPs may take action. TorrentFreak says only three of the five have indicated what steps they'll take. Verizon reportedly plans to slow the connections of users who have been found sharing illegal files, while AT&T will block access to popular sites and Time Warner Cable will direct browsers to a landing page.
