Sprint drops unlimited 4G mobile broadband

Sprint Nextel is getting rid of its all-you-can-leech 4G wireless broadband plan for tablets, netbooks, USB cards, and mobile hotspots. The company has informed subscribers in a notice on their website that it will stop offering its unlimited 4G mobile broadband for those devices. This change does not apply to smartphone plans.

The wireless broadband service will no longer bundle unlimited 4G wireless into existing plans that limit 3G usage to 3/5/10GB monthly usage. Sprint said that as of next billing cycle, customers will continue to pay the same amount for their existing plans, without the unlimited 4G access perk. Sprint will combine all 3G and 4G usage to calculate total data usage. Customers who exceed their monthly cap will be charged an overage of 5 cents per MB.

Sprint is also changin the usage policy for the Mobile Hotspot addon for smartphones, in that it will now limit Mobile Hotspot usage to 5GB of data per month, with 5 cents overage per megabyte. The monthly off-network data limit remains at 300MB, which is a combination of phone and Mobile Hotspot data usage.

The company's latest move calls into question how long the unlimited data plan for smartphones will last, even though a spokeswoman for the company reiterated Sprint's commitment to its unlimited data plan for smartphone users. Sprint, with its smaller network footprint needs unlimited data to differentiate itself from rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
