According to recent data collected by telegeography, skype-to-skype calls accounted for 13 percent of total international call minutes in 2009. The stats showed that a whopping 54 Billion out of a total of 406 Billion international call minutes were done through skype which is a reflection of the amazing growth of this VOIP service in recent past. It is really interesting to note that while international telephone traffic has slowed down skype's traffic has been on the rise. Stephen Beckert, an expert at telegeograpgy, said that, "Skype's on-net international traffic (between two Skype users) grew 51 percent in 2008, and TeleGeography's estimate for 2009 is 63 percent growth, to 54 billion minutes." In 2008, skype was at 8 percent of the total international traffic, that is around 33 billion call minutes. Becker further said,
According to Skype's data analyst, Skype served over one Billion call minutes in 2009 with one third being video. Those minutes were generated by 520 million users from 250 different countries which means the VOIP network is pretty much spread in all territories around the globe. Source: Techtified.com
