Blu-ray doubles storage capacity

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced a new high-capacity format, more than doubling the amount of storage capacity.

The BDXL specification, which is targeted primarily at commercial segments such as broadcasting, medical and document imaging archiving applications, ups the storage to 128GB on write-once disks and 100GB on rewritable disks. A consumer version is also expected.

The group's managed it by incorporating three to four recordable layers, compared to the current two. But because this requires a more powerful laser, the new format won't be compatible with current hardware.

"Professional industries have expressed a desire to find optical disc solutions that enable them to transition away from magnetic media for their archiving needs," says Victor Matsuda, Blu-ray Disc Association Global Promotions Committee chair.
